Nadi swedan is a unique form of swedan procedure where sweating is induced by passing steam over the body part by using a special instrument known as nadi sweda yantra. The steam is passed through a rubber tube fitted to the instrument and it is an easy method of applying heat to a localized part of a body.

Pind Swed is Fomentation done by dipping bolus in hot decoction or medicated oil. Procedure: Special herbal leaves, roots, boiled rice or grinded meat with sesame seed, flaxseed or mustard seeds are mixed in oil, grinded and tied up in a muslin bag. This bag is used to massage the body or the affected parts with this special bolus after dipping it in warm oil or decoction. Uses: This treatment is for vata vikar, vat- kaphaj vikar, sciatica (gridhrasi), osteoarthritis, arthritis, spondylosis, sports injuries, frozen shoulder(apbahuka), paralysis (pakshaghat), polio, muscular pain etc.

There are numerous therapies in Ayurveda and Navara Kizhi is one of the most effective ways to relax the mind and body. Navara Kizhi is known as Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda in Sanskrit where Shashtika means 60, Shali means rice, Pinda means poultice, and Sweda means sweat. It is a type of massage that induces sweat and provides strength to the muscles while rejuvenating and re-energizing your body. This procedure uses Shashtika Shali (a special type of rice harvested in 60 days and exclusively used for Ayurveda treatments), which is processed in herbal decoctions and milk. It is then tied in a poultice to be rubbed against the whole body or afflicted part to provide heat to painful joints and muscles.

Passive heat or fomentation given to a part of the body or the whole body with the help of a bolus containing medicated leaves is known as patra pinda swedana. Patra-medicinal leaves Pinda – bolus Sweda-fomentation Procedure: Leaves of medicinal plants have properties of relieving pain, stiffness & swelling. These leaves in Ayurveda are said to contain Vata alleviating factors known as Vata hara. Such leaves are freshly collected and chopped into small pieces. Then it is fried in medicated oil adding turmeric, lemon in it. The mixture is filled in a piece of cotton cloth and a bolus is prepared out of it. On one side a pan is filled with little quantity of oil and kept on mild fire. The passive heating of bolus is done and gently applied to affected part of the body. In such a manner the procedure of patra-pinda sweda is carried on.

The major benefit of such a medicated steam bath is that it mobilizes accumulated ama (bodily wastes) that accumulates in different srota (body channels) and blocks the way of vital energy reaching different parts of the skin. The steam is mainly aimed at swedan (sweating) to release the accumulated toxins. Steam bath is also supported by different steam bath boxes, in which the person can take a standing, sitting or lying down position. Fully medicated steam is passed to the chamber so that the person gets his body below neck completely bathe in medicated steam. In addition to removing toxic wastes, Vashpaswedan also is beneficial in curing different skin problems like psoriasis.
